* Most of the cobweb-shaped appearances on the floors of the lunar farside's large Floor-Fractured Craters never received official names. A name such as '''Rimae Komarov''' for the system of "''rilles''" on the floor of the Floor-Fractured Crater '''Komarov''' is not an exact designation. On the other hand, it's a useful name.

Revision as of 15:02, 15 April 2018

Debra Hurwitz has completed the most comprehensive cataloging of lunar SINUOUS (!) rilles, and it is now online as a revised catalog with additional extension!.
Here is the paper that describes and analyses the work, and here is her Atlas of Lunar Sinuous Rilles. Each rille is numbered, and IAU name given when one exists; these numbers - H1 to H195 - should be the designation used to refer to lunar rilles. Debra includes lengths, depths, widths and other data, as well as LRO images for each rille. Fantastic work!
- Is there a catalog for LINEAR rilles too? - DannyCaes DannyCaes Jan 20, 2018

An attempt to create a much more comprehensive ABC of officially IAU-named and unofficially named Linear, Concentric, Craterfloor-Concentric, and Sinuous Rilles (on both the moon's nearside and farside)

Over time these will be classified as linear, concentric (basin), craterfloor-concentric, sinuous or other. You can help classify them - look at the image and decide which they are - and add your ID by typing four tildes (~) ! And if you disagree with a previous classification add what you think is a better one; use question marks as needed.
About discontinued IAU names
These names were part of the IAU nomenclature of Named Lunar Formations however they were not printed, or printed differently on the System of Lunar Craters charts. Since the extent to which the IAU accepted the changes to rille naming and numbering made in the SLC has never been clear, the current approval status of these names is unknown.
  • Most of the additional (unofficially named) linear and sinuous rilles are discoveries from Danny Caes (detected while exploring the LROC ACT-REACT QUICK MAP of the entire moon's surface) (the "Big Shadows" version).

- Rima Winthrop (the rille on the southwestern part of Winthrop's floor). http://bit.ly/2hWoIAI
- Worm Rille (NASA-related nickname for the odd "rille" just north of crater Chuck Hole in US Highway Number One) (the IAU's Rimae Hypatia).
X
- The X (the crossing of two rilles on the floor of Palmieri) (see Rimae Palmieri).
Y
- Rima Yangel'
- Fossa Yangel' (name only on LTO 41-C4).
- Rimae Yerkes (the cluster of rilles west-northwest of Yerkes). http://bit.ly/2wFrNLp
Z
- Rima Zahia (the southern part of it seems to be Hurwitz 110).
- Rimae Zupus

Additional notes

  • Most of the cobweb-shaped appearances on the floors of the lunar farside's large Floor-Fractured Craters never received official names. A name such as Rimae Komarov for the system of "rilles" on the floor of the Floor-Fractured Crater Komarov is not an exact designation. On the other hand, it's a useful name.
  • October 24th, 2017. Just discovered something which looks like an "upside-down" rille, or very thin ridge, at 11°30' South / 34°05' West (west of the arc-shaped hill Herigonius Nu). - DannyCaes DannyCaes Oct 24, 2017 (see the Big-Shadows WAC close-up in the LROC QuickMap: http://bit.ly/2zlb9Wi ).
  • November 6th, 2017. Our dedicated rille-seeker discovered another "upside-down" rille, or very thin ridge, at Dorsa Argand: http://bit.ly/2zmQH6G
  • Frequently photographed during the mission of Apollo 15, never received their own name (or names). The odd system of rilles at the western rim of the Aristarchus Plateau: http://bit.ly/2iRcMUQ

Additional catalog of BAYONET shapes in well known broad linear rimae such as Rima Ariadaeus and Rimae Hypatia (typical examples of the -en echelon- effect on the moon's surface)

Research: Danny Caes (all sorts of lunar atlases and the online LROC's Act-React Quick Map)
  • Rima Ariadaeus, at 6°20' North / 14°20' East (east of Silberschlag).
  • Rima G.Bond, the section immediately west of Hall.
  • Rima Cauchy, the section south of Cauchy A and the less pronounced section east-northeast of Cauchy itself.
  • Rimae Goclenius, the section between Goclenius B and Gutenberg E.
  • Rimae Goclenius (northern part), the section east-southeast of Gutenberg G (aka Wilkins's Vernet), and another section farther eastward of Gutenberg G.
  • Rimae Grimaldi, the section between Grimaldi S and Damoiseau D.
  • Rimae Hevelius, the section immediately east of Lohrmann D.
  • Rimae Hypatia (the section of it once known as U.S. Highway Number One during NASA's Apollo era), at 0°40' South / 22°40' East (west of Moltke).
  • Rimae Sirsalis, at 16° South / 62° West (east of Cruger A, north of Cruger C).
