Depth data from Kurt Fisher database
  • Westfall, 2000: 1.83 km

Nomenclature

  • Sir George Gabriel Stokes (August 13, 1819 – February 1, 1903) was an Irish mathematician and physicist, who at Cambridge made important contributions to fluid dynamics (including the Navier-Stokes equations), optics, and mathematical physics (including Stokes' theorem). He was secretary, then president of the Royal Society. He investigated the relation between the chemical composition and the optical properties of various glasses, with reference to the conditions of transparency and the improvement of achromatic telescopes.
  • The nomenclature of this region, which the LPL felt was vaguely identified in the IAU’s original Named Lunar Formations, was extensively modified, especially in connection with their Rectified Lunar Atlas (see Arthur’s report in IAU Transactions XIIB). Stokes is apparently a new name added for a previously unnamed feature. - Jim Mosher
