Named Features

  • Alan (craterlet in Catena Davy).
  • Apollo 15 S-IVB stage (the third of five S-IVB stages which impacted on the moon to show artificially created seismic waves. Apollo 15's S-IVB stage seems to have impacted east of Turner).
  • Apollo 17 S-IVB stage (the final one of the five S-IVB stages which impacted on the moon. Apollo 17's S-IVB stage seems to have impacted northeast of the oblong hill Lalande Eta, west-southwest of the Fra Mauro Zeta complex) (in which Curtiss' Cross could be observed; a famous clair-obscur effect).
  • Catena Davy (contains craterlets Alan, Delia, Harold, Osman, Priscilla, and Susan).
  • Catena Guericke Mu (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the small irregular chain of craterlets immediately west-northwest of the hillock Guericke Mu. See AS16-P-5418).
  • Curtiss' Cross (famous clair-obscur and trompe l'oeil effect at the Fra Mauro Zeta complex, see page Fra Mauro).
  • Davy (J.Hewelcke's Mons Lathmus).
  • Delia (craterlet in Catena Davy).
  • Dorsum Lalande B (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge north of the bowl-shaped crater Lalande B, west of Mosting C).
  • Dorsum Lassell (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge north-northeast of Lassell and north of Alpetragius B, aka Garcia-Gomez) (see Chart 54).
  • Eight (a nickname from D.Caes for the curious 8-shaped formation Guericke J and Guericke S northeast of Guericke itself).
  • Fra Mauro Delta (hillock northeast of Fra Mauro).
  • Fra Mauro Zeta (quite large and rather rough looking region northeast of Fra Mauro) (an easy target in all sorts of telescopes).
  • Fra Mauro Eta (oblong hill north-northeast of Fra Mauro) (contains the craterlet Fra Mauro R) (for Fra Mauro Delta, Zeta, and Eta, see Chart 54 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Fra Mauro Zeta cluster (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the elongated cluster of craterlets south-southeast of Fra Mauro Zeta).
  • Guericke (J.Hewelcke's Mons Taigetus).
  • Several hills and hillocks around Guericke received Greek letter designations. North of Guericke there's an oblong hill known as Guericke Kappa. West of Guericke Kappa there's a hill known as Guericke Lambda. East of Guericke and Kundt (Guericke C) there's a hill known as Guericke Xi. South-southeast of Guericke there's a hillock known as Guericke Chi. And southwest of Guericke there's a hillock known as Guericke Mu (see Chart 68 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Harold (craterlet in Catena Davy).
  • Horseshoe (a nickname from H.Hill for Parry M, southeast of Parry itself).
  • Insula Lemnos (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for Lalande A and high-albedo area).
  • Kundt
  • Lalande (Van Langren's Rosetti, J.Hewelcke's Mons Micale).
  • Lalande Delta (hill west of Lalande).
  • Lalande Eta (elongated hill west of Lalande, east-northeast of Fra Mauro).
  • Lalande Iota (elongated hill southwest of Lalande A).
  • Lalande Omega (seems to be near Lalande Delta) (for the hills Lalande Delta, Eta, and Iota, see Chart 68 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Lassell Massif (an unofficial name from C.A.Wood for the yellowish colored elevation northwest of Lassell, at the lower margin of this Rukl map, see also map 54).
  • Mare Nubium (Van Langren's Mare Borbonicum) (the northern part of it, occupying the lower section of Chart 43, although on the original Chart 43 in Rukl's printed atlas there's no indication of the name Mare Nubium).
  • Mons Parthenius (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the Fra Mauro Zeta complex, in which Curtiss Cross is noticeable during favourable conditions).
  • Mösting (Van Langren's Barbarini) (J.Hewelcke's Mons Mimas (?), E.A.Whitaker seems uncertain about that one).
  • SLC map D5 shows the location of an unnamed large crater southwest of Mosting. The diameter of this ancient crater seems to be more-or-less the same as Alphonsus.
  • Osman (craterlet in Catena Davy).
  • Palisa (J.Hewelcke's Mons Lathmus).
  • Palus Nimborum (Riccioli's discontinued name for the region north of his Peninsula Fulgurum).
  • Parry (Van Langren's Hardii).
  • Peanut/ Mister Peanut (a nickname from W.Higgins for the curious peanut-shaped formation between Guericke and Kundt).
  • Peninsula Fulgurum (Riccioli's discontinued name for the region between Turner and Ptolemaeus).
  • Peninsula Peloponnesus (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the high-albedo area Gambart-Guericke).
  • Priscilla (craterlet in Catena Davy).
  • Prom. S. Petri (Van Langren's disallowed name for the region northwest of Lalande) (note: on the Strasbourg forgery of Van Langren's map this region was called Prom. S. Pui).
  • Prom. Taenarium (J.Hewelcke's name for the high-albedo point at Guericke B).
  • Rectangle (an unofficial name from D.Alter for Davy Y in which Catena Davy is detectable).
  • Rima Flammarion
  • Rodes (a disallowed name from F.C.Lamech for the distinct bowl shaped crater Lalande A, south-southwest of Lalande itself).
  • Sinus Tarantinus (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the region north of Lalande).
  • Surveyor 2 (crash-landed on September 23, 1966, west of Lalande) (this impact site is not depicted on Antonin Rukl's original printed version of his Chart 43, because he used wrong coordinates: 4° North instead of 4° South) (the presumed coordinates of Surveyor 2's impact site are 4° South/ 11° West) (by now, its true pinpoint coordinates are perhaps already known, thanks to the Hi-Res photographs of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter). - DannyCaes Oct 30, 2015
  • Susan (craterlet in Catena Davy).
  • Tolansky
  • Turner
  • Turner Lambda (hill east-northeast of Turner).
  • Turner Upsilon (hill south-southeast of Turner) (for the hills Turner Lambda and Upsilon, see Chart 54 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Turner Gamma and Turner Tau (according to page 185 in Tony Dethier's Maanmonografieen two hills south of Turner).
  • Turner Mu (according to page 185 in Tony Dethier's Maanmonografieen a hill northeast of Turner, together with Turner Lambda).
  • Turner F's southwest ray (a nickname from D.Caes for Turner F's southwest running high-albedo ray).
  • Turner's ghost (a nickname from D.Caes for the officially unnamed ghost crater immediately west of Turner).
  • Two arcs (a nickname from D.Caes for an odd formation northwest of Turner) (about halfway between Turner and Gambart on Chart 32). See http://bit.ly/2vqgQg7
