Named Features

  • Airy swirl (an unofficial name for the peculiar Reiner Gamma type formation west of Airy at the flat region unofficially called the Loro basin on the Rand McNally moonmap).
  • Aliacensis (Van Langren's Elisabethae Palat. Fil.) (J.Hewelcke's Mons Antilibanus, together with the IAU's Werner) (note: Aliacensis is the pronounced crater at the lower right corner of Chart 55).
  • Alpetragius (Van Langren's Mazarinii, J.Hewelcke's Mons Phoenix) (note: this crater's pronounced central peak is often called Egg-in-a-Nest).
  • Alphonsus (Van Langren's Ferdinandi III Imp. Rom.) (note: this is the pronounced crater slightly rightward of the upper left corner of Chart 55).
  • Arzachel (Van Langren's Annae Reg. Fran., J.Hewelcke's Mons Cragus).
  • Arzachel Gamma (the central peak of Arzachel) (see Chart 82 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Blanchinus (Van Langren's Fromi).
  • Celenorum Tumulus (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the La Caille-Vogel chain).
  • Delaunay
  • Donati
  • Dublier (a disallowed name from H.P.Wilkins for Alphonsus D).
  • Faye
  • La Caille
  • Loro Basin (an informal name for the flat region west-southwest of Airy, contains a less-known swirl formation, the name Loro Basin was printed on the Rand McNally moonmap). I see on SLC-map C6 the circle-shaped remains of what seems to be an ancient crater about halfway between Airy and Arzachel. This could be the same formation as Rand Mc.Nally's Loro basin.
  • Lunar X (an informal name for a popular clair-obscur phenomenon).
  • Millas (a disallowed name from H.P.Wilkins for Parrot C) (J.Hewelcke's Mons Cadmus).
  • Mini Egg-in-a-Nest (a nickname from D.Caes for Thebit L with its central peak).
  • Parrot
  • Purbach (Van Langren's Christierni IV Reg. Daniae, J.Hewelcke's Mons Libanus).
  • Regiomontanus (Van Langren's Christinae Reg. Suec., J.Hewelcke's Mons Libanus).
  • Rimae Arzachel
  • Schupmann (P.Fauth's disallowed name for Hell B at the lower left corner of Chart 55).
  • Terra Dignitatis (Van Langren's disallowed name for the whole of Chart 55).
  • Terra Fertilitatis (Riccioli's discontinued name for the region south of Arzachel) (thus depicted on the map in the Dutch book Op Ontdekking in het Maanland by A.J.M.Wanders, 1949).
  • Terra Sanitatis (Riccioli's discontinued name for the region north of Thebit/Donati (thus depicted on the map in the Dutch book Op Ontdekking in het Maanland by A.J.M.Wanders, 1949).
  • Thebit (Van Langren's Rantsovii).
  • Vallis Parrot (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the valley-like groove at the south-southeastern part of Parrot, which is part of the Imbrium radial sculpture).
  • Vallis Parrot C (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the short valley between Parrot C and La Caille GA, which is part of the Imbrium radial sculpture).
  • Werner (Van Langren's Eychstadi) (J.Hewelcke's Mons Antilibanus, together with the IAU's Aliacensis).
  • Werner Alpha (the central peak of Werner) (see Chart 83 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Werner D (a tiny high-albedo craterlet on the northern part of Werner's rim, supposed to show brightness changes throughout the lunar day) (see also Lassell D, Linne, and Posidonius Gamma).
  • Werner-Airy Basin (unofficial name) (see also Rukl Zone 56).
