Mons Maraldi

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named after the nearby crater (Maraldi).
  • According to Mary Blagg's Collated List (where it is catalog #278), this feature was named Maraldi Gamma by Neison, and it was introduced into the original IAU nomenclature of Named Lunar Formations in that form.
  • The system of Greek lettered peaks was dropped in 1973 (IAU Transactions XVB), to be replaced by new names using the Latin prefix mons.
  • IAU Transactions XVIB (1976) made a special exception for the present peak, which was to be known by the hybrid name Mons Maraldi Gamma. This is in a section of recommendations attributed by Whitaker to the LPACC. Later in the same transactions the name is "corrected" to Mons Maraldi (without the Gamma), the name under which it is currently known. - Jim Mosher
