Description

The feature formerly known as Fontenelle Epsilon is rocky outcropping in Mare Frigoris, about 50 km southwest of the center of Fontenelle.
Seems to be the southern corner of the formation known as Madler's Square.

Additional Information

  • Coordinates and diameter are from LO-IV-128H registered to the 1994 ULCN.
  • Height rises between 540m-640m (Boint, "Profiles Of Features In The J. Herschel Crater, Fontenelle Crater, and La Condamine Crater Area", Selenology Today, Vol. 9. 1-12.)- fatastronomer
  • The peak immediately north of Fontenelle Epsilon (long 16.2W, lat 63.5N) rises between 280m-360m (Boint, "Profiles Of Features In The J. Herschel Crater, Fontenelle Crater, and La Condamine Crater Area", Selenology Today, Vol. 9. 1-12.).- fatastronomer
  • An old crater rim 100km north of Fontenelle crater (21.7 W.Long., 67 N. Lat.) was measured and a profile produced. The maximum height measured was just under 1600m. (Boint, "Profiles Of Features In The J. Herschel Crater, Fontenelle Crater, and La Condamine Crater Area", Selenology Today, Vol. 9. 1-12.).- fatastronomer

Nomenclature

  • Named after the nearby crater (Fontenelle).
  • Part of original IAU nomenclature of Blagg and Müller (1935), Collated List #1333.
  • Nearly all Greek-lettered peak names east of Fontenelle, including this one (Fontenelle Epsilon), were discontinued by the IAU in 1973 (IAU Transactions XVB), most of them are still seen on the charts of the Times Atlas of the Moon.
