- Named for (Édouard) Benjamin Baillaud (February 14, 1848 – July 8, 1934), a French astronomer. He specialized in celestial mechanics, in particular the motions of the satellites of Saturn. He served as Director of the Paris Observatory and as a President of the IAU. According to the introductory material to Named Lunar Formations, Baillaud was a member of the international committee tasked with consolidating lunar nomenclature preceding the Commission formed for that purpose by the IAU. He received the Bruce Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 1923, and extensive links to information about him can be found on that site.
- This feature was Catalog number 998 in Mary Blagg's Collated List where it is noted that it was called Euctemon a in Neison, 1876. The other two authorities did not name it.
- In the original IAU nomenclature of Named Lunar Formations (1935) the name was changed to Baillaud, adopting a proposal by Lamèch.
