Right: LO-IV-191H The IAU’s Dorsa Harker runs diagonally from a point slightly to the north of “A” to some ill-defined point to the south of “B”. It may or may not include the ridges labeled “C” and “D” (see Nomenclature). Above “A” Dorsa Harker encounters Dorsa Tetyaev, which abuts it at a right angle and then runs to the north. The prominent headland below center right is Promontorium Agarum. The 6-km circular crater on the plains of Mare Crisium, to the left of the "B" arrow is Fahrenheit, and the 32-km crater partially visible along the bottom margin is Auzout. The pattern along the right side of this view of eastern Mare Crisium is calibration data on the Lunar Orbiter film.

Dorsa Harker

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named for Alfred Harker (1859-1939), a British petrologist.
  • Dorsa Harker was among the many provisional dorsa names appearing on NASA’s LTO charts that were approved by the IAU “as now assigned and printed” (on those charts) in IAU Transactions XVIB. Unfortunately there is no chart for LTO province 44C3, which would show the northern extremity where Dorsa Harker intersects Dorsa Tetyaev. The ridges that run from “A” to “B” in the annotated LO-IV-191H view are clearly labeled as parts of Dorsa Harker on LTO-62B1, as is the eastern part of the ridges at “C” on LTO-62B4. The western part of the ridges at “C” is plotted on LTO-62A3 but not labeled as part of any named ridge system (an inadvertent omission?). The southward extension of Dorsa Harker to the west of Mons Usov (at “D”) is labeled as part of the ridge system on LM-62, but it is neither clearly plotted nor labeled on LTO-62B4 (which shows that area).
  • The position and diameter given for Dorsa Harker in the on-line IAU Planetary Gazetteer is large enough to encompasses the ridges at “A”, “B” and “D”, but too small to include those at “C” (even though they are labeled as such on LTO-62B4 and the original IAU approval was for the feature “as now assigned and printed” on the LTO’s). Because of the many uncertainties and inconsistencies in the way Dorsa Harker are represented, the intended extent of this IAU-named feature is uncertain.
