Nomenclature
- Named for Lucian of Samosata (125-190), a Greek writer.
- This crater was Maraldi B in the original IAU nomenclature of Blagg and Müller. The replacement name "Lucian" is listed as proposed (with two others) on LTO 61A2 (1974). The date of its approval by the IAU is not clear, but the name appears in the cummulative list of changes in IAU Transactions XVB (1973). Biographical information was unofficially reported in Ashbrook, 1974. - JimMosher JimMosher
