Three of Apollo 8's orbital Hasselblad photographs show the bay-shaped Helmert with its dark floor: AS08-12-2171, AS08-12-2172, and AS08-12-2173.
Apollo 16's orbital ITEK-panoramic frames AS16-P-4352 and AS16-P-4357 captured a southward oblique look at Helmert (very near the left margins of both frames).

  • This name appears on LTO-81B3. It does not appear to replace any previous IAU-approved designation. Although it is in the cumulative list of approved names printed in IAU Transactions XVB, when and how it came to be approved is not entirely clear from the IAU record. - Jim Mosher
