Lat: 59.2°N, Long: 16.9°E, Diam: 25 km, Depth: 3.85 km, Rükl: 5, Upper Imbrian

LO-IV-104H Sheepshanks is to the lower right of center. The larger crater (with the central peak) to the northwest of Sheepshanks is C. Mayer B, with circular C. Mayer E above that. The 7-km crater near the right margin is Sheepshanks A.

Nomenclature

  • Anne Sheepshanks; British benefactor (1789-1876).
  • Anne was the sister of Richard Sheepshanks, a prominent British astronomer (for whom the crater and its satellite features are not named). After Richard's death, Anne contributed funds to the Cambridge University Observatory, which they used to purchase a modern telescope, also named in her honor. - Jim Mosher
