Thomas P. Hansen: Guide to Lunar Orbiter Photographs (NASA SP-242)

(glossary entry)

Description

This useful publication describes the photographic objectives of the five Lunar Orbiter missions (primarily to scout out potential Apollo landing sites), gives detailed lists of the planned sites and photos returned for each, and provides 104 pages of index maps showing the footprint of each photo, both on generalized maps of the lunar hemispheres and, for the Moon's nearside, on detailed maps of particular sites showing the footprints superpimposed on LAC map backgrounds. In addition to the maps, fourteen tables list the photos in various arrangements (e.g., Apollo Landing Sites, Areas of General Interest, Incompletely Readout & Degraded Photos, etc.).

Additional Information

  • Versions of this book in PDF format are available from the USGS (95 MB), from the NASA Technical Reports Server (10 MB) and from the LPI (37 MB).
  • On p. 29, the footprints of the farside photos returned by Lunar Orbiter II appear to have been inadvertently printed over a background showing the nearside features.
