Named for Robert Emden (full name: Jacob Robert Emden, 1862-1940), a Swiss astrophysicist and meteorologist noted for his contributions to the theory of stars as gas spheres.
Emden was in the initial list of farside feature names published by the IAU in Menzel, 1971.
