Nomenclature

  • Named for Maurice (Moritz) Loewy (1833-1907), a Czech-born French astronomer who became Director of the Paris Observatory. With [/Puiseux Pierre Puiseux] he compiled that observatory's Atlas Photographique de la Lune, one of the first comprehensive photographic atlases of the Moon, appearing between 1896 and 1910.
  • This feature was Catalog number 2523 in Mary Blagg's [/Collated%20List Collated List] where the three authorities called it [/Hippalus Hippalus] or [/Agatharchides Agatharchides] f (their intentions not always being clear).
  • In the original IAU nomenclature of [/Named%20Lunar%20Formations Named Lunar Formations] (1935) the name was changed to Loewy, adopting a proposal by [/Krieger Krieger] and [/K%C3%B6nig König].
    • According to the [/Named%20Lunar%20Formations%20Text introductory material] to [/Named%20Lunar%20Formations Named Lunar Formations], Maurice Loewy was the Chairman of the original international committee tasked with consolidating lunar nomenclature, formed in the year of his death. [/Puiseux Puiseux] and [/Baillaud Benjamin Baillaud] succeeded him as members.
  • Perhaps interesting to know that there was also a Raymond F. Loewy; one of the best known industrial designers of the 20th century.- DannyCaes DannyCaes Nov 11, 2010
