High and low albedo streaks and spots on Born's inner slopes are noticeable on Apollo 15's orbital ITEK-panoramic frames AS15-P-10086 and 10091. Born's location is between the centre and right margin of both frames.

Nomenclature

  • Max Born (December 11, 1882 – January 5, 1970) was a German physicist and mathematician. He won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics. Born played a crucial role in the development of quantum mechanics. In a letter to Born in 1926, Einstein made his famous remark regarding quantum mechanics, often paraphrased as "The Old One does not play dice."
  • This replacement name for a formerly lettered crater was provisionally introduced on LTO-80B3 (for which it served as the chart title). The name had been considered, but was rejected, during the initial naming of lunar farside features because of its similarity to "Bohr" (IAU Transactions XVA, Menzel, 1971. However, the IAU soon changed its mind and added Born to a name-bank (for future use) in IAU Transactions XVIB. Three years later its use on the LTO was approved (IAU Transactions XVIIB). - JimMosher JimMosher
