Intestine shaped formations

These are chaotic looking depressions which have a typical "intestine" look, and are mostly "extensions" of common sinuous rilles

East of Gruithuisen Alpha

A typical example of an intestine shaped formation is the one immediately east of the Gruithuisen alpha hillock at 38°20' West/ 32°50' North. The location of the "intestine" itself is 37°25' West/ 32°50' North.
This curious formation was captured on Lunar Orbiter 4 frame LO4-145-h1.
It was also photographed during the mission of Apollo 15:
AS15-P-10300 shows the Gruithuisen intestine near the rightward margin of the frame (scroll all the way to the right).
See also AS15-P-10307 (and also near the rightward margin of the frame).

This is N°120 in Debra M. Hurwitz's Atlas of Sinuous Rilles.

Other examples

  • The sinuous rille on the floor of Vallis Schroteri. Typical example!
  • Another intestine shaped formation (or snake-shaped formation) is Herigonius' Snake at the northeastern extension of Rimae Herigonius.
  • There's also one slightly north of the odd elongated depression at 8°40' North/ 48°30' West (near the northern end of Rima Suess). This is Hurwitz 24.
  • North-northwest of Suess K (Hurwitz 20): http://bit.ly/2CvUkJC
  • The eastern part of the floor of Ulugh Beigh A shows something which looks very "intestine" like, see LO-IV-183-h1, and also http://bit.ly/2CqdfFC
  • On the western and northern parts of the floor of Posidonius.
  • Rima Mees Y (the unofficially named sinuous rille slightly north of Mees Y, see:http://bit.ly/2fpOyMh ).

A meandering lunar sinuous rille, a Coronal suture, a Lambdoid suture, and a Sagittal suture

On the moon there's the sort of meandering sinuous rille which looks very much like the meandering sutures in (or on) a human skull. The function of a meandering lunar sinuous rille is totally different from that of the Coronal suture, the Lambdoid suture, and the Sagittal suture, but... the similarities in their appearances are striking!
