WARNING: the LPI's orbital Apollo photograph AS14-75-10304 doesn't show the region of Harlan and Marinus because the eastern equatorial zone of Mare Smythii and Mare Marginis was captured, not the southern region of Mare Australe!

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named for Harlan J. Smith (8/25/1924 – 10/17/1991), a prominent American astronomer. In 1963 he was named chair of the University of Texas astronomy department where he also became the director of the McDonald Observatory. At the observatory he oversaw the construction of the 2.7m telescope he had persuaded NASA to build in support of planetary missions.
  • The IAU's WGPSN renamed Marinus D to honor Smith in 2000.
  • This is one of the very few craters to honor a specific person by using their first name. The farside crater Hildegard (Hildegard von Bingen) is another example.
