Nomenclature
- Named for Julius Heinrich Georg Franz (1847–1913), a German astronomer. He is most noted for his measurements of features near the lunar limbs. He published a semi-popular book about the Moon in 1906 called Der Mond. In this work (or in his later 1918 Die Randlandschaften des Mondes?) Franz is said to have named some mares along the limb Mare Orientale, Mare Autumni and Mare Veris. The later two were later renamed to the Lacus Autumni and Lacus Veris.
- The IAU name Franz originally encompassed a larger area. The IAU later restricted the meaning of the name to the northern component (NASA SP-241, p. 537).
- A curiosity... who is (or perhaps was) Dr. O. Franz who's mentioned on page 173 of Burnham's Celestial Handbook (Volume 1) ? - DannyCaes May 3, 2015
