- Zinner was captured on Apollo 15's orbital ITEK-panoramic photograph AS15-P-10360: Zinner is the first "large one" of the small bowl-shaped craters north of Schiaparelli. On AS15-P-10360, Schiaparelli is visible at the frame's left margin, Zinner to the right of it.

Nomenclature
- Named for Ernst Zinner (1886-1970), a German astronomer.
- This replacement name for a formerly lettered crater was introduced on LTO-38B4 (for which it served as the chart title). Although it appears in the cumulative list of approved names in IAU Transactions XVB, it is not clear precisely exactly when and where it was approved. Biographical information was unofficially reported in Ashbrook, 1974. - JimMosher JimMosher
