Mackin (crater) - "J. Hoover Mackin, geomorphologist, teacher, and gentleman was known for his ability to bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative geologic studies. Astronaut-named feature, Apollo 17 site, approved as Mackin-Apollo in IAU Transactions XVIB (1976).
The name was shortened to Mackin in IAU Transactions XXIVB (2000).
According to the original IAU citation the name honors J. Hoover Mackin (1905-1968), an American geologist noted for important contributions to many subjects within that discipline, including at the end of his life lunar geology. Although he died before he could do so, during the Apollo program he was one of several experts selected to examine samples returned from the Moon.
The original inclusion of the suffix "-Apollo" implies there may have been a plan to name a larger feature after Mackin, so that the suffix would be needed to distinguish the two, but no other lunar feature has been named for him. - Jim Mosher
