LO-IV-190H Because of its postion near the Moon's north pole, the sun angle at Sylvester is always low, and most of the crater's floor is usually in shadow.

Nomenclature
- James Joseph; British mathematician (1814-1897).
- Name given by Arthur and Whitaker in Rectified Lunar Atlas (1963) and approved by IAU in 1964 (Whitaker, 1999, p. 234).
- The pronounced valley south of Sylvester and east of Froelich is unofficially called Vallis Sylvester by D. Caes. See LAC 9 in the Clementine Atlas (the upper right corner of LAC 9). Note that this valley is NOT Catena Sylvester!
