HALLWAG's map of the moon's farside
An exploration and investigation of Hans Schwarzenbach's well-known map, by Danny Caes
(note: the whole content of this page should be online within a couple of weeks or months).
Alphabetic list of erroneous locations and absent nomenclature
- Although HALLWAG's map shows many of the IAU's official names (it is still a valuable source for those who want to explore the moon's farside via a map printed on paper), the alphabetic list below shows how much of them were not included during pre-press activities, or were printed at wrong locations.
- The early version of this map shows very few names, such as Jules Verne, Mare Moscoviense, and Tsiolkowsky. A small version of this early map was also included in several books of spaceflight (such as Herbert J. Pichler's Die Mondlandung; der menschheit grosstes abenteuer, or Patrick Moore's Moon Flight Atlas).
- I don't know how many times this map was (or is) updated. The version I have at home does not show the names of the STS 51-L crew at the basin Apollo (the seven astronauts who perished during the launch of shuttle Challenger in january 1986).- DannyCaes Jun 20, 2010
- The art to add all the absent names on the Hallwag map, with a fine Rotring drawing pen (black colored ink), is a real pleasure and a wonderful pastime!- DannyCaes Jul 4, 2010
- Many thanks to Jim Mosher, the explorer and investigator of the IAU's activities in official lunar nomenclature. A huge amount of Jim's research is already online in many pages of the Moon-Wiki project!- DannyCaes Jul 11, 2010
