Rimae Sosigenes

The Sosigenes Irregular Mare Patch (SIMP)

The SIMP is one of the most well-known examples of this very rare kind of lunar surface formation. The SIMP's location is very near (say: at) Rimae Sosigenes. The "home" of the SIMP (a curious elongated depression) is a very easy target for all sorts of common telescopes! The SIMP itself, however, is only detectable on orbital lunar photographs, for example those of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The exact coordinates of the SIMP are: LAT 8.335 / LON 19.071. The SIMP is catalogued as Number 1 in the list of known Irregular Mare Patches.

Nomenclature

It's the Moon's Fault (name RIMAE SOSIGENES not mentioned in this article).
