Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Mikhail Fedorovich Subbotin (June 29, 1893 - December 26, 1966) was a Soviet astronomer. Subbotin's early work was in the theory of functions and probability. Later he worked in celestial mechanics producing new methods of calculating orbits from three observations based on solving the Euler-Lambert equations. His astronomy work used his mathematical skills.
  • Subbotin was among the long list of farside names approved by the IAU in 1970 and published in [/Menzel%2C%201971 Menzel, 1971].
  • In the planning for Apollo 8, the first manned circumlunar mission (1968), this crater (which did not then have an official name) was referred to informally as "Chaffee", a name subsequently approved for use in connection with a completely [/Chaffee different] farside crater (source: Phil Stooke's LPOD).
