(IAU Directions) SNELLIUS.--A very fine ring-plain, 50 miles in diameter, S.W. of Petavius, with terraced walls, considerably broken on the S.W. by craters, &c. It rises on the W. nearly 7,000 feet above a dark floor, which contains a central mountain. N.W. of Snellius is a smaller ring- plain (Snellius a), and due W. a curious rough plateau, bordered on the N. and S. by a number of small craters.

  • Willebrord van Roijen Snell (Snellius) (1580 - October 30, 1626) was a Dutch astronomer, optician and mathematician most famous for the law of refraction now known as Snell's law.
  • According to Whitaker (pp. 215), this name was introduced on Riccioli's map, however Riccioli used this name to label the feature now known as Stevinus.
