Don't know if it's the same Plummer as the one mentioned above (Henry Crozier Keating Plummer), but... according to the footnote on page 64 in Volume 1 of T.W.Webb's Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes (chapter VENUS), he (Plummer) concluded from his own observations that the brightness of Venus is (or was) about 9 times more powerful than the brightness of the brightest star in the heavens (Alpha Canis Majoris, aka Sirius). - DannyCaes DannyCaes Jul 18, 2015
