Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Although the IAU Planetary Gazetteer identifies Ardeshir as a "Persian (Iranian) king's name," it actually seems to drawn from the bank of generic "first names of men and women" given in IAU Transactions XVIB (1976), which were not supposed to refer to any specific person.
  • According to NASA RP-1097, "Mons Ardeshir" is a Minor Feature whose name was originally intended only for use in connection with Topophotomap 65C1/S1 (on which it is plotted).
  • The name was approved by the IAU (along with many other Topophotomap names) in IAU Transactions XVIIB (1979).
