Nomenclature

  • Named for Francois Napoleon Marie Moigno (Abbe Moigno) (b. 15 April, 1804; d. 14 July, 1884), a physicist and author. In 1852 he founded the well-known scientific journal Cosmos.
  • The name Moigno seems to first appear in a list of new lunar names proposed by [/Lee John Lee] and [/Birt W. R. Birt] published in MNRAS and slightly expanded in Astronomische Nachrichten. In neither publication is the identity of the honoree explained.
  • This feature is Catalog number 683 in Mary Blagg's [/Collated%20List Collated List], where the name Moigno is noted as having been used in [/Neison%2C%201876 Neison, 1876]. Neither [/Julius%20Schmidt Julius Schmidt] nor [/Beer%20and%20M%C3%A4dler Beer and Mädler] named the feature. Instead, Schmidt complained he was unable to identify the British Association's Moigno and [/Peters Peters] (another name that appeared in the Birt and Lee list).
  • The name Moigno was adopted into the original IAU nomenclature of [/Named%20Lunar%20Formations Named Lunar Formations].
