Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named for Faddei Faddeevich Bellinsgauzen (1778-1852), a Russian explorer.
  • Bellingshausen was in the long list of farside names published in [/Menzel%2C%201971#Bellinsgauzen Menzel, 1971].
  • The spelling was changed to Bellinsgauzen at some unknown later date, possibly as a result of a modified system of transliterating the Russian alphabet. The old spelling has been retained in parenthesis. It is listed that way in the [/IAU%20Planetary%20Gazetteer IAU Planetary Gazetteer], but it is unclear if the parenthetical part is a required part of the new name, or not. When both new and old spellings are included, Bellinsgauzen (Bellingshausen) has the distinction of being the [/Nomenclature%20Zoo#Longest_Shortest longest] primary name in the [/IAU%20nomenclature IAU nomenclature]. - JimMosher JimMosher

LROC Articles

The moon's largest impact basin (note: post number 219 is about the South Pole - Aitken basin, but... there's also something in it about the East-of-Bellinsgauzen Constellation region of interest; see the lower section of that page).
