Additional Information
A location near Olivier seems to be the centre of a basin which is unofficially known as U5, according to the northpole map in the page Lunar Basins List.
Nomenclature
- Named for Charles Pollard Olivier (1884-1975), an American astronomer.
- Olivier's name was added to the bank of names for future use in [/IAU%20Transactions%20XVIB IAU Transactions XVIB] (1976).
- It was "approved as assigned" in [/IAU%20Transactions%20XVIIB IAU Transactions XVIIB] (1979).
- It is unclear where the assignment occurred. The name does not appear on NASA's October 1970 Lunar Polar Chart (LMP-3). Although this map claims to reflect the nomenclature by the IAU in 1970, it was issued before the final list of [/Menzel%2C%201971 Menzel, 1971] had been published. Instead of Olivier, the name Hedin appears at appears to be the modern Olivier Y, a crater north-northwest of Olivier (see [/Hedin Hedin]). - JimMosher JimMosher
- Olivier Y was also called [/Hedin Hedin] in one of Patrick Moore's books (which shows a map of the moon's farside). - DannyCaes DannyCaes Jun 26, 2010

Something to investigate:
Page 125 of T.W.Webb's Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes, Volume 2: The Stars shows us the appearance of the name Oliver (in the description of the binary star Burnham 744 in the constellation Eridanus). Was this Oliver perhaps Charles Pollard Olivier? If not, who was Oliver?
