Nomenclature

  • Named for John Napierof Merchistoun (1550 – 4 April 1617), nicknamed Marvellous Merchistoun, was a Scottish mathematician, physicist, astronomer/astrologer and 8th Laird of Merchistoun.
  • According to Whitaker (p. 218), this name was introduced into the modern nomenclature by Schröter, but it had been used earlier by Van Langren.
