Consolidated Lunar Atlas Rima Newcomb was the name applied to the shallow gouge emerging from [/Newcomb Newcomb]'s northwest rim and terminating near the crater to the north of [/Kirchhoff Kirchhoff].

Nomenclature

  • This feature is catalog entry 301 in Mary Blagg's [/Collated%20List Collated List], where it is described as one of two rilles labeled [/R%C3%B6mer Römer] Zeta by [/Neison%2C%201876 Neison].
  • It entered the original [/IAU%20nomenclature IAU nomenclature] of [/Named%20Lunar%20Formations Named Lunar Formations] as Newcomb Ir, named after the nearby crater, [/Newcomb Newcomb].
  • The name became Rima Newcomb I in the [/System%20of%20Lunar%20Craters System of Lunar Craters], where it is plotted on the [/Quad%20Maps Quad Maps].
  • The name can be seen printed on LAC 43 (1965).
  • The name Rima Newcomb was apparently eliminated during the preparation of the [/IAU%20Planetary%20Gazetteer IAU Planetary Gazetteer], where it is listed as a dropped/disallowed name with a drop date of "1985". No record of the name actually having been dropped exists in [/IAU%20Transactions%20XIXB IAU Transactions XIXB], the volume for 1985.
  • The [/Collated%20List Collated List] also included three other "valleys" near [/Newcomb Newcomb]: catalog entries 316-318. These entered the IAU nomenclature as [/Newcomb Newcomb] E and F, and [/Berzelius Berzelius] G.
