Mendel

Additional Information

  • [/Central%20peak%20composition Central peak composition]: A & GNTA2 ([/Tompkins%20%26%20Pieters%2C%201999 Tompkins & Pieters, 1999])
  • Possible narrow valley or chain of depressions (a catena) at Mendel's western rim, running south-southwest toward Lippmann's western rim. Research: Danny Caes.
  • Is there a large unnamed crater northwest of Mendel? (see LAC 122 in B.Bussey's and P.Spudis's Clementine Atlas). The centre of this unnamed crater is located at (approximately) 44° South/ 114° West.

Nomenclature

  • Gregor Johann; Austrian biologist (1822-1884).
  • The crater which is nowadays officially known as Mendel J was about to be called Bartlett, but... this name was never approved by the IAU. See page Luna Incognita. Bartlett was also one of the new names of Hugh Percy Wilkins (Bartlett should have been a crater on the northern part of the moon's near side). Alas, Wilkins's Bartlett was (also) never approved by the IAU.
