Nomenclature

  • Named for Annie Jump Cannon (December 11, 1863 – April 13, 1941), an American astronomer whose cataloging work was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification. With Edward C. [/Pickering Pickering], she is credited with the creation of the Harvard Classification Scheme, which was the first serious attempt to organize and classify stars based on their temperatures.
  • The name [/Alhazen Alhazen] F was introduced in [/Neison%2C%201876 Neison, 1876] and appears as Catalog Number 25 in Mary Blagg's [/Collated%20List Collated List] as well as in the original IAU nomenclature of [/Named%20Lunar%20Formations Named Lunar Formations] (1935).
  • The replacement name Cannon was proposed by Arthur and Whitaker in the [/Rectified%20Lunar%20Atlas Rectified Lunar Atlas] (1963) and approved by IAU in [/IAU%20Transactions%20XIIB 1964].
