Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named for Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (31 March 1811 – 16 August 1899), a German chemist. With his laboratory assistant, Peter Desaga, he perfected the burner now known by his name. He also worked on emission spectroscopy of heated elements. Together with Gustav [/Kirchhoff Kirchhoff] he discovered the elements cesium and rubidium. He is considered the founder of modern gas-analytical methods.
  • The name Bunsen was originally proposed by [/Julius%20Schmidt Julius Schmidt] for the crater now known as [/Newcomb Newcomb]. The name was assigned to the present, previously unnamed crater in the [/Rectified%20Lunar%20Atlas Rectified Lunar Atlas] (1963) and approved by IAU in 1964.
  • Rimae Bunsen (a veritable moon addict's unofficial name for the system of rilles on the floor of Bunsen).
