1. For the benefit of anyone who may be interested I have uploaded to the FILES area an edited version of the Elger text in which Elger’s use of “east” and “west” has been reversed to conform to the modern IAU directions. To access this file, go to “Manage Space” in the menu bar at the left, then click “List and upload files.” The file in question (426 kb) is called Elger_17712-converted_to_IAU_directions.txt.

2. Should text from this version be pasted into “The-Moon” pages, I would suggest it be distinguished as “Elger (IAU directions)” versus the plain “Elger” that appears on many existing pages.

3. I would also suggest that some effort be made to distinguish index entries that are official IAU names from those that all old IAU names that have been discontinued, or that were never IAU names. In the USGS-maintained Planetary Gazetteer, obsolete names are distinguished by placing them in square brackets. In the present, case I would suggest a parenthetical comment be added to the title line at the top the page. For example:

  • The Helmet (not an official IAU name)
  • Alpine Valley (IAU name = Vallis Alpes)
  • Oriani (discontinued IAU name)


This would help those new to lunar studies to distinguish the formal from the informal nomenclature.

4. The current new (crater) page template automatically copies the page name into the search fields for LPOD and Lunar Orbiter photos. When the page name contains spaces, this does not work. As others have probably discovered, one way to correct this is to manually copy the desired name into the search fields using the “%20” character combination (without the quotes) to represent the spaces (this is possible in the “Text Editor” mode). In the Lunar Orbiter search field, the name has to be followed by the “%7C0” character combination (without the quotes) for the search to commence automatically.

5. Adding new pages to make simple comments like this seems a bit awkward to me. It would appear to me the intention of the Wiki-spaces architects was that comments be made by posting messages to the “Discussion” tab connected with each page. Since the-Moon Wiki doesn’t seem to have a Home page, to which “Discussion” tab should general comments like this be posted? The Introduction page? The Discussion page? Or somewhere else?

If the appropriate place is the “Discussion” tab on the “Discussion” page, then I would suggest that the main “Discussion” page consist simply of a comment something like this:

  • Please post general comments about “The-Moon Wiki” by clicking the “Discussion” tab at the top of this page and posting your message.

6. Is there a way to search through all comments posted to all pages?

7. Is it possible to replace/delete files or pages once they have been uploaded?

P.S.: to partially answer my question #6 above: click Recent Changes in the menu bar at the left of any page. Then go to the Discussions tab of the page that appears. A list of all recently posted messages will appear, listed by the title of the page to which they were posted. So it would seem that posting general comments regarding the-Moon Wiki as Messages to the Discussion page would be the best idea, as they will be listed under Recent Changes - Discussions as a comment posted under the heading Discussion.
