Left: Lunar Orbiter view Right: Clementine view -- both from Map-A-Planet. See the Lettered Craters image below for identification of Evans which is the small, roughly hexagonal crater at center. The larger, also roughly hexagonal crater to its lower left is Evans Q. Both nearly disappear in the high Sun Clementine image. [/Wan-Hoo%20%28Van-Gu%29 Wan-Hoo], smaller than Evans, is just outside Evans Q at the 10 o'clock position. The shadowed crater in the lower right corner of the overall field is [/Ioffe Ioffe].

Nomenclature

  • Named for Sir Arthur Evans (1851-1941), a British archaeologist.
  • Evans was introduced to the IAU nomenclature in [/Menzel%2C%201971#EVANS Menzel, 1971].
  • This crater could also honour the NASA astronaut Ronald Ellwin Evans, who was the Command Module Pilot (CMP) of Apollo 17. Ronald Evans died in 1990. - DannyCaes DannyCaes Nov 17, 2013
