Nomenclature

  • Named for Karl Ludwig Harding(1765-1834), a German astronomer. Harding began his career as an assistant to selenographer Johann Schröter, later working for Gauss and eventually publishing a catalog of 120,000 stars. He also discovered the third known asteroid, Juno.
  • According to Whitaker (p. 219), this name was introduced by Mädler.
