- Believe it or not, southern crater Playfair (just north of Apianus) was captured on Apollo 16's south-looking oblique Fairchild-metric (mapping) frames of REVOLUTION 26. Of these frames, frame AS16-M-0705 shows Playfair very near the central part of the curved horizon. It could be that something of crater Apianus (south of Playfair) is visible at the central part of the curved horizon, but I'm not sure. - DannyCaes DannyCaes Jul 24, 2015

Description: Elger
([/IAU%20Directions IAU Directions]) APIANUS.--A magnificent ring-plain, 38 miles in diameter, N.E. of [/Aliacensis Aliacensis], with lofty terraced walls, rising on the N.W. to about 9,000 feet above the interior, and crowned on the E. by three large conspicuous craters. The border is broken on the N. by a smaller depression and a large ring with low walls. The dark-grey floor appears to be devoid of conspicuous detail.

Nomenclature
Petrus Apianus (April 16, 1495 – April 21, 1552; also known as Peter Apian) was a German humanist, famous for his works in mathematics, astronomy and cartography. In 1524 he produced his Cosmographicus liber , a highly respected work on astronomy and navigation that was to see at least 30 reprints in 14 languages and that remained popular until the end of the 16th century.
