Additional Information

  • Lowest point of the Moon at -6.8 km on crater floor (in [/South%20Pole-Aitken%20Basin SPA basin]). [Cook et al LPSC 33 (2002) 1281]
    • Note: both the SELENE/Kauya and LRO/LOLA laser topographic data now place the low point on the Moon at around 70.38°S/172.48°W -- a point on the floor of [/Antoniadi Antoniadi]. - JimMosher JimMosher
  • Crater counts yield mare ages of 3.44 and 3.50 b.y. [/Haruyama%2C%20J.%20and%20others%2C%202008 Haruyama, J. and others, 2008].

Nomenclature

  • Named for Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (July 1, 1646 – November 14, 1716), a German polymath. He occupies an equally large place in both the history of philosophy and the history of mathematics. He invented calculus independently of Newton, and his notation is the one in general use since. He also discovered the binary system, foundation of virtually all modern computer architectures.
  • See also the unrelated [/Montes%20Leibnitz Montes Leibnitz], a discontinued IAU name.
