Forsberg, Herrick, and Bussey (1998): The Effects of Impact Angle on the Shape of Lunar Craters
(bibliography entry)
Description
Paper differentiates oblique versus high-angle (vertical) impacts by comparing down-range and cross-range profiles. The crater profiles were extracted from the Apollo LTO charts.
Additional Information
- Craters identified as high-angle based on symmetric profiles are: Timocharis, Fischer, Macrobius A, Peek and Sulpicius Gallus
- Craters identified as low-angle (unsymmetric) are Necho, Proclus, Pytheas, Messier A, and Messier
- Messier is identified as likely a 1° impact with Messier A as a ricochet product.
- Torricelli A (not illustrated) and Pytheas are identified as likely 15° impacts. The remaining unsymmetric craters are believed to be from impacts in the range 15° to 45°.
