Wilkins and Moore: The moon; a complete description of the surface of the moon, containing the 300-inch Wilkins lunar map

(glossary entry)

Description

This popular observer's guide to the Moon by H. Percy Wilkins and Patrick Moore, first published in 1955, was widely read by amateur lunar observers in the latter half of the 20th century. Unless otherwise qualified, references to it in this Wiki are to the 1961 Second Edition.

Additional Information

  • The great bulk of the book consists of detailed descriptions of the features depicted on the maps (much in the manner of Neison, 1876 and Elger, 1895, but in addition to its Introduction it contains several useful appendices. These include a chapter on lunar photography (on film, of course) by Ewen Whitaker, a comprehensive list of lunar maps from 1610-1960, a list of new (non IAU-approved) names that appear on the Wilkins' map, and short biographies of some of the most notable lunar observers of the past.
  • Danny Caes has explored many of the names that appear on the list in Appendix II.
  • The on-line collection of slides used by Patrick Moore to illustrate his lectures includes examples of drawings and maps by both Wilkins and Moore, and others. Unfortunately the relatively low resolution and lack of any documentation as to who created them or what they were meant to represent detracts from their usefulness. - JimMosher
  • Reviews of the first edition of the book:
    • E. A. Whitaker on page 121 of the February 1955 JBAA.
    • K. W. Abineri and D. W. G. Arthur in the April 1956 JBAA starting on page 177
