Bunsen

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named for Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (31 March 1811 – 16 August 1899), a German chemist. With his laboratory assistant, Peter Desaga, he perfected the burner now known by his name. He also worked on emission spectroscopy of heated elements. Together with Gustav Kirchhoff he discovered the elements cesium and rubidium. He is considered the founder of modern gas-analytical methods.
  • The name Bunsen was originally proposed by Julius Schmidt for the crater now known as Newcomb. The name was assigned to the present, previously unnamed crater in the Rectified Lunar Atlas (1963) and approved by IAU in 1964.
  • Rimae Bunsen (a veritable moon addict's unofficial name for the system of rilles on the floor of Bunsen).
