Charles J. Byrne: The Far Side of the Moon (2008)

(glossary entry)

Description

According to the publisher's blurb, this companion to Byrne's nearside book "provides comprehensive coverage of the far side of the Moon, and is the first book that collects photographs from all five Lunar Orbiter missions: Clementine, Apollo, Luna, Zond, and Nozomi." The photos are actually drawn almost exclusively from Lunar Orbiter and Clementine, supplemented by two from Apollo 16 and one each from the other missions. The farside is divided into seven regions, presented in a fashion similar to that in the previous book.

Additional Information

  • The Table of Contents is available on the Springer website.
  • Like the previous book, it is accompanied by a CD-ROM, although its contents do not seem to be explained. The "ReadMe" file on the disk says "This CD, together with the CD in its companion volume "Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Near Side of the Moon" contains all the Lunar Orbiter photos that were selected for "Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon" by Bowker and Hughes, NASA SP-206, US Government Printing Office, 1971. Files in this CD include all the Lunar Orbiter photos from Lunar Orbiter missions 1, 2, 3, and 5 from Bowker and Hughes, as well as the subset of photos from Lunar Orbiter 4 that were used in this book. These Lunar Orbiter 4 photos were also provided in the near side book. In addition, this CD includes all of the photos and mosaics from Clementine, Apollo 16, Luna 3, Nozomi, and Zond 3 that are used as base images in this book."
  • The Preface states that the feature names "are aligned with the list approved by the IAU", but like the Clementine Atlas on which it seems to rely, this is a private work and should not be taken as an authoritative documentation of IAU nomenclature. - Jim Mosher

Typographical errors abound

  • As with almost all moonbooks and lunar atlases, this book by Byrne is a typo-corrector's dream! (or rather: a nightmare). The number of typographical errors (in the printed lunar nomenclature) is almost surreal, and one want to know if someone was asleep during pre-press activities. I call this the CLEMENTINE ATLAS SYNDROME, because the list of detected typographical errors (of the lunar nomenclature) in the first edition of this atlas is EXTREMELY long!!! - DannyCaes Mar 25, 2018

Page 66: Resnick (on this page, Charles J. Byrne mentioned the names Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins as craters near or at the farside's Apollo-basin, which is an error, because their location is at the southern part of Mare Tranquillitatis, on the moon's nearside, north of Statio Tranquillitatis; the landingsite of Apollo 11)
Page 68: The exact location of crater Grotrian on the moon seems to be a difficult topic, because the chart on page 68 in The Far Side of the Moon shows the name Grotrian at the location of the crater which is officially known as... Sikorsky! On that chart, the crater which is officially known as Grotrian doesn't seem to have a name. But... that's not all, because on that same chart, the crater which is officially known as Chamberlin received the name Moulton, the crater which is officially known as Moulton received the name Sikorsky, and the crater which is officially known as Kimura received the name Van Wijk, while the crater which is officially known as Van Wijk is just nameless...
