Description: Elger

(IAU Directions) KRAFFT.--A very similar object on the N., of about the same dimensions; with a central peak, and a large crater on the dark floor abutting on the S.E. wall, and another of about half the size on the outer side of the E. border. From this crater a very remarkable cleft runs to the N. wall of Cardanus: it is bordered on either side by a bright bank, and cuts through the N.E. border of the latter formation. It is best seen when the W. wall of Cardanus is on the morning terminator.

Additional Information

Depth data from Kurt Fisher database
  • Westfall, 2000: 3.52 km
  • Viscardy, 1985: 1.25 km
  • Cherrington, 1969: 2.01 km

Krafft H and Krafft K, both westward of Krafft itself, show curious double rim sections. See LO-IV-174-h2- DannyCaes Aug 6, 2014

Nomenclature

- Wolfgang Ludwig Krafft (1743-1814) was a German-Russian astronomer and physicist.
- Perhaps interesting to know that there was once a team of volcanologists (husband and wife) called the Kraffts (Katia and Maurice Krafft).- DannyCaes Nov 28, 2010
- Erroneously printed as "Kraft" (only one "f") instead of Krafft on page 67 (chart 27) in Chuck Wood's and Maurice Collins's 21st Century Atlas of the Moon (2012).- DannyCaes Jan 21, 2013
