Nomenclature

  • Zeno of Citium (Greek: 333 BC - 264 BC) was a Hellenistic Stoic philosopher from Citium, Cyprus.
  • According to Wilkins's and Moore's book THE MOON there should be a crater to the southeast of Zeno, called Hallowes, but the I.A.U. did not accept that name.
  • Hallowes was an English selenographer.
  • Strange to say, the name Zeno was also included on a map of Montes Riphaeus, made by J.N.Krieger (see the book MAPPING AND NAMING THE MOON by E.A.Whitaker, page 164, figure 104-a). According to J.N.Krieger, Zeno was a small crater (Euclides M) at the southern part of Montes Riphaeus (Krieger's "Riphaeus Major"). Detection of the name "Zeno" on Krieger's map: Danny Caes.
  • A curious "clair-obscur" effect related to the location of the evening terminator at or near Zeno, was photographed by the dedicated lunar observer Stefan Lammel. He calls this phenomenon the Zeno steps.
