Lunar (& Planetary) Science and Engineering

at 18

Boulder, CO

Overview

The University of Colorado at Boulder has strong programs of lunar or lunar-based research in several general disciplines:

  • Physics (specifically, Space and Plasma Physics)
  • Astrophysical and Planetary Science
  • Geology
  • Aerospace Engineering Sciences

Faculty involved in lunar research include:

  • Mihaly Horanyi, Physics, lunar dusty plasma environment (modeling and theory)
  • Zoltan Sternovsky, Aero. Eng., lunar dusty plasma environment (instrument development and laboratory experiments)
  • Scott Robertson, Physics, lunar dusty plasma environment (laboratory experiments)
  • Tobin Munsat, Physics, development of the CCLDAS Dust Accelerator
  • Jack Burns, Astrophysics, lunar-based astrophysics research, radio-frequency observations from the Moon
  • Doug Duncan, Astrophysics, lunar-based astrophysics research, Education and Public Outreach for LUNAR (see below)
  • Dan Scheeres, Aero. Eng., Astrodynamics of solar system bodies, dust transport and evolution on small bodies (asteroids and the Moon)
  • Steven Mojzsis, Geological Sciences, thermal history and timing of impacts on the Moon and Earth by studying ancient zircons (CLOE)

More Information

CU-Boulder is home to two teams of the NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI), specifically, the Colorado Center for Lunar Dust and Atmospheric Studies (CCLDAS) and the Lunar Astrophysics Node for University Research (LUNAR). Additionally, a third NLSI team, the Center for Lunar Origin and Evolution (CLOE), is based at the Space Sciences Division of the Southwest Research Institute, located in downtown Boulder. All three of these NLSI teams support graduate education and research through the University, and CCLDAS and LUNAR have undergraduate research opportunities as well.
