Additional Information
- The present IAU coordinates of this feature (17.8° S/ 136.3° E).are misplaced by about 23 km. If AS15-M-0305 is registered to LTO-102A1 (which agrees pretty well with the 1994 ULCN), the center is at 17.29° S/ 136.89° E. - Jim Mosher
Nomenclature
- Named for Valentin Vasilyevich Bondarenko (1937-1961), a Soviet student-cosmonaut who died in a training accident.
- This name was first published in the IAU's 1991 Reports on Astronomy.
- Although listed in the IAU Planetary Gazetteer as replacing the former lettered crater designation Patsaev G, that name was actually part of Ewen Whitaker's effort to letter the farside for NASA RP-1097 (1982) and was never approved by the IAU. The IAU Planetary Gazetteer listing also gives a map reference of "SOV 1985" for this and the other seven new names published in 1991. This would seem to be a reference to an unidentified Soviet map from 1985.
- The name Bondarenko is not printed on page 205 (LAC 102) of the Clementine Atlas (2004).- DannyCaes Oct 9, 2011
