Bellinsgauzen (Bellingshausen)
Additional Information
Nomenclature
- Named for Faddei Faddeevich Bellinsgauzen (1778-1852), a Russian explorer.
- Bellingshausen was in the long list of farside names published in Menzel, 1971.
- The spelling was changed to Bellinsgauzen at some unknown later date, possibly as a result of a modified system of transliterating the Russian alphabet. The old spelling has been retained in parenthesis. It is listed that way in the IAU Planetary Gazetteer, but it is unclear if the parenthetical part is a required part of the new name, or not. When both new and old spellings are included, Bellinsgauzen (Bellingshausen) has the distinction of being the longest primary name in the IAU nomenclature. - Jim Mosher
LROC Articles
The moon's largest impact basin (note: post number 219 is about the South Pole - Aitken basin, but... there's also something in it about the East-of-Bellinsgauzen Constellation region of interest; see the lower section of that page).
