Named Features

  • Bürg (Van Langren's Thales).
  • Daniell
  • De L'Isle (F.C.Lamech's disallowed name for a crater (?) at the southeastern part of Lacus Mortis).
  • Dorsa Smirnov (the northern part of it, west-southwest of Posidonius) (for the main part of Dorsa Smirnov see Rukl's 24).
  • Dorsum Burg (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge at the western part of Burg's rim, running from the northern to the southern parts of the rim of Lacus Mortis).
  • Dorsum Luther (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge north and southwest of Luther).
  • Earhart (an unofficial name from R.Sood, L.Chappaz, and J.Melosh for a previously unknown large crater (diam. 200 km) of which the central part of it is located E.N.E. of the small bowl-shaped crater Eudoxus J, roughly speaking that's in the centre of the triangle Eudoxus - Lacus Mortis - Mare Serenitatis).
  • Euclidis (Van Langren's disallowed name for Luther Epsilon).
  • Ghost of Posidonius (a nickname from D.Caes for the more-or-less circle shaped arrangement of several wrinkle ridges southwest of Posidonius, on Mare Serenitatis) (this "ghost" was already discovered during the preceding century and was depicted on lunar map SLC-B3).
  • Giner (a disallowed name from H.P.Wilkins for the distinct crater Posidonius P, northwest of Posidonius itself).
  • Grove (Van Langren's Lutiani).
  • Hellene (F.C.Lamech's disallowed name for Posidonius J, the largest one of the three craters north-northeast of Posidonius itself).
  • Hercules (Van Langren's Biaei, J.Hewelcke's Montes Macrocemnii).
  • Lacus Mortis
  • Lacus Mortis Fault/ Rupes Mortis (unofficial names).
  • Lacus Somniorum (the western part of it was called Lacus Borysthenes by J.Hewelcke) (the eastern part was called Sinus Carcinites by... J.Hewelcke) (J.Hewelcke must have been very fond of all sorts of names!) (note: the honorable D.Caes is another fine example of this kind of flamboyant nomenclaturists...).
  • Lost Peninsula (C.A.Wood's unofficial name for the hilly Terra-region northwest of Luther).
  • Luther
  • Luther Alpha (the hillock west-northwest of Luther itself, south of C.A.Wood's Lost Peninsula) (Luther Alpha is mentioned on Chart 20 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Mandela (the name Mandela or Nelson Mandela International Peace Crater has been proposed for Plana G, in honor of Nelson Mandela, by the Luna Society International, but this has not been approved by the IAU).
  • Mare Serenitatis (occupying the lower left section of Chart 14) (Van Langren's Mare Eugenianum, J.Hewelcke's Pontus Euxinus).
  • Mason (Van Langren's Longomontani) (?) (E.A.Whitaker seems to be uncertain about that one, see also Plana).
  • Mons Ambenus (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the bright ray from Mason to Mare Frigoris).
  • Mons Peuce (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the northwestern border of Lacus Mortis).
  • Peace crater (a strictly unofficial name for Daniell D, see LPOD Give Truth a Chance, October 11 - 2009).
  • Plana (Van Langren's Longomontani) (?) (E.A.Whitaker seems to be uncertain about that one, see also Mason).
  • A cluster of hills and hillocks to the southwest of Plana (near the crater Plana G) received the names Plana Beta, Plana Gamma, Plana Delta, Plana Epsilon, Plana Zeta, and Plana Xi) (see Chart 20 in the Times Atlas of the Moon, and page 107 in Tony Dethier's Maanmonografieen).
  • Posidonius (Van Langren's Lafaillii, J.Hewelcke's Insula Macra).
  • Posidonius Gamma (a high-albedo craterlet at the centre of the lower margin of Chart 14, on the most northern section of Dorsa Smirnov) (Posidonius Gamma seems to be of the same kind of formations as Linne, Lassell D, and Werner D, because a number of observers reported brightness-variations in and around these craterlets before, during, and after Full Moon phase) (note: on the LROC's Act-React Quick Map this craterlet is labeled as Posidonius Y).
  • Prom. Hippolai (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for a bright point near Luther).
  • Rimae Bürg
  • Rimae Daniell
  • Rimae Luther H (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the criss-cross looking system of rilles southwest of Luther H, on the southern part of C.A.Wood's Lost Peninsula).
  • Rimae Posidonius
  • Shannen Ridge (an unofficial name from M.Collins, see description at the lower part of this page: Additional Information).
  • Thebit (Van Langren's disallowed name for Luther Zeta).
  • Williams (on several moonmaps this crater is erroneously known as O'Kell, this was one of the disallowed names from H.P.Wilkins for... Atlas E, the unimpressive crater at the upper right corner of Chart 14 and lower right corner of Chart 6).

Additional Information

Shannen Ridge

A previously undetected and officially unnamed ridge which runs from the part of the Montes Caucasus near Eudoxus toward the southern rim of Lacus Mortis (over the couple Plana and Mason) to Williams is unofficially called Shannen Ridge by Maurice Collins (with Charles Wood co-author of the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon). The name Shannen Ridge is incorporated on chart 9 of this atlas.
